Amice Rappard, Ook namens mijne ouders heb ik U te vragen of ge trek zoudt hebben – nu dezer dagen eens herwaarts te komen _ – Zoodra ge wilt _ – Met mijne moeder is ’t nu zoo ver gevorderd ze in een makkelijken stoel in de huiskamer zit – naar buiten gaat in een wagentje / begint te loopen &c _ , &c _ – Dus is het voorspoediger er mee afgeloopen dan in ’t begin men durfde op rekenen _ – Buiten – bloeien de boomen – en is het juist ’t moment waarop het nog niet te heet is voor verre togten _ Heb U dezer dagen nog 3 penteekeningen gestuurd / Slootje – mastboomen in ’t Ven – Rietdaken – waarvan ik dacht de motieven U wel zouden bevallen _ – Wat de uitvoering aangaat, natuurlijk zoude ik regt hartelijk wenschen dat de rigting der penkrassen meer expressief de vormen gevolgd hadde, en de krachten die den toon der massa’s daarstellen ook hun modelé meer uitdrukten _ Het in elkaar zitten der dingen – het modelé er van – is / denk ik ge me toegeven zult / ook niet systematisch of opzettelijk verwaarloosd – maar ik heb er een ruwen slag in moeten slaan om in betrekkelijk korten tijd het effekt van licht en bruin – de stemming die de natuur momenteel had – ’t aspect in ’t groot – eenigzins daar te stellen. Want alle drie zijn bepaalde momenten die men dezer dagen zien kan. Ik hoop dat gij komen zult _ – Natuurlijk brengt ge Uw gereedschap mede en hoe meer ge van Uw werk meebrengt hoe beter – de schets van de Terschellingsche wijven en ’t wevertje zou ik nog wel eens willen zien _ – Gegroet – ook van mijn ouders _ b. à t _ Vincent Als gij dan komt is dit dunkt me een goede gelegenheid de teekeningen die nu bij U zijn mee te brengen. We zullen dan met een aantal nieuwen als ge wilt het hervatten. ’t Is altijd goed het werk een beetje te laten wandelen – en als de lui er niet aanwillen / dat is niets – toch weer op nieuw laten kijken _ – Als ge nu dezen misschien aan een paar lui hebt laten zien en die hebben ze afgekeurd of er om gelagchen of wat ze willen van gezegd – als ze voortdurend er meer van blijven zien / veranderen ze – niet allen – doch enkelen _ – ik verlang er naar ge mijn geschilderde studies ook weer eens zien zult _ daarstellen < daar stellen van – < van My dear friend Rappard , My parents join me in asking you whether you would care — to come here one of these days. As far as the execution is concerned, of course I would wish right heartily that the direction of the pen strokes had followed the forms more expressively, and the forces that establish the tone of the masses also expressed their shape better. I think you’ll grant me that the way things fit together — the shape of them — hasn’t been systematically or deliberately neglected — but I had to make a rough stab at it in order somehow to render the effect of light and shade — nature’s mood at that moment — the overall aspect — in a relatively short time. For all three are specific moments that one can see these days. I hope that you’ll come. Of course you’ll bring your tools with you, and the more of your work you bring the better — I’d like to see the sketches of the old women of Terschelling and the little weaver again. We can then resume with a number of new ones if you like. It’s always good to let the work circulate a bit — and if people don’t take it, it doesn’t matter — show it again anyway. If you’ve now shown these to a few people perhaps, and they’ve rejected them or laughed at them or said what they want about them — if they constantly go on seeing more of them, they’ll change — not all — but some. As well as the three works referred to above, Van Gogh had sent Van Rappard the following nine drawings: Behind the hedgerows ( F 1129 / JH 461 ), Parsonage garden ( F 1133 / JH 485 ), Winter garden ( F 1128 / JH 466 ), Parsonage garden ( F 1130 / JH 465 ), Pollard birches ( F 1240 / JH 469 ), Avenue of poplars ( F 1239 / JH 464 ), The kingfisher ( F 1135 / JH 468 ), ‘In het broek’ (In the brook), and a weaver with a loom, possibly Weaver ( F 1124 / JH 456 ). See letter 437 . From letter 442 it appears that he probably also had Weaver ( F 1116 / JH 462 ).
